The Persians
So many people, you know, were never lost in a single day...
The iconic tragedy "THE PERSIANS" by Aeschylus, after the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, comes to the Sainopouleio Amphitheatre.
The "Persians" constitute the oldest surviving complete work of ancient Greek dramaturgy and simultaneously the first theatrical record of historical events. Aeschylus, an eyewitness to the Battle of Salamis, creates a "stage reportage" of war, just eight years after the catastrophe.
At the heart of the performance lies humanity in the face of loss. The "tragedy of the defeated" opens a timeless dialogue: the defeated do not belong only to the past, but to every era, to every side. The names sought by the Chorus are the names of all those who were lost and continue to be lost in the wars of the world...
Twenty-two actors, on an almost bare stage, form a protagonist-Chorus. Using language, movement, and music as their tools, they depict the collective trauma of a society standing numb before destruction.
A performance that reflects upon memory and defeat, while simultaneously highlighting the indissoluble human need for democracy and justice, within a world that increasingly establishes power and uncritical submission!
