Philoctetes

A tragedy of faith, exclusion and moral choice - between dream and compromise

In Philoctetes, Sophocles dramatizes a scheme of deception, devised by Odysseus and carried out by Neoptolemus, the young son of Achilles. The two men arrive on the uninhabited island of Lemnos, on the edge of the world, where the Achaeans had abandoned Philoctetes for ten years, wounded by an incurable injury. Their mission is to steal Philoctetes’ famous bow, because without it the fall of Troy is impossible.

“I hate the era I live in. Dark years. I don’t want my life like this.”

The myth resonates with the present. Two representatives of the older generation.
One, isolated outside the world, faithful to the ideals of Utopia and Desire, and the other, embedded within the world, faithful to the principles of Realism and Political Feasibility. Each, in his own way, tries to win over a representative of the younger generation.
Who will win him over? One or the other? Or perhaps… neither of the two?
