The 37th Cultural Festival of Sainopoulei 2024 has ended

The Sainopouleio Foundation, in collaboration with the Municipality of Spartis, continued this year seamlessly the vision of the late benefactors and Presidents Georgiou

With great success and an enthusiastic response from the public, the 37th Cultural Festival 2024 at the Sainopouleio Amphitheatre and the small “Neromylos” Theatre came to an end, once again confirming the pivotal role of the Sainopouleio Foundation on the cultural map of Laconia.

In cooperation with the Municipality of Sparta, the Sainopouleio Foundation continued this year as well to faithfully uphold the vision of the late benefactors and Presidents Georgios & Chrysavgi Sainopoulos, keeping the flame of Culture alive. The Festival’s main objective remained the promotion of noteworthy theatre and music productions that highlight universal values and inspire reflection on contemporary social and political issues through a timeless artistic perspective.

The main programme of events at the Sainopouleio Amphitheatre included:
  • Concert by the MUSICA Choir of the Association “Friends of Music” (29 June)
  • Theatre performance “Babades me Roumi” by Papathanasiou – Reppas (3 July)
  • Children’s performance “The Magic Key” by Carmen Rouggeri (8 July)
  • Concert by the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Sparta featuring Dimitris Bassis (10 July)
  • High-demand theatre and music evenings featuring works such as Aeschylus’ “The Suppliants”, Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, Aristophanes’ “The Birds”, and Euripides’ “Heracles Furens”, as well as a concert by Nikos Portokaloglou and a tribute concert to Dimitris Mitropanos featuring Peggy Zina.
At the same time, a special atmosphere was created by the events held at the small “Neromylos” Theatre within the Sainopouleio Grove in Magoula, featuring concerts and theatre performances such as the musical programme “Remember Me and Love Me – Parallel Stories” by the Sparta National Conservatory, the play “Tavli” by Dimitris Kehagias, the musical evening “A Night Full of Wonders” with Panos Loumakis, and the performance “Gyni Pleousa” by Alexandros Papadiamantis.

An important part of this year’s Festival also included parallel events organized by local institutions, with the participation of schools, parents’ associations, and cultural clubs of the region, such as “A Stroll Through Greece” (4th Festival of Primary School Dance Groups), “Laconia in the Cycle of Life”, the event “Als Aigiidos – Through the Passage of Time”, and the programme “The Elements of Nature”. Through these activities, the vibrant cultural life of the local community and its close connection with the Sainopouleio were highlighted.

The 37th Festival was not unaffected by unforeseen challenges. The highly anticipated concert by Marios Frangoulis with Giota Negka, initially scheduled for 22 July 2024, was postponed due to the artist’s injury and rescheduled for 4 September 2024. However, despite efforts to reschedule, the concert was ultimately cancelled, as officially announced by the Sainopouleio Foundation.

Similarly, the ballet performance “Swan Lake” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, scheduled for 29 July 2024, did not take place, as the Royal Classical Ballet was forced to cancel its tour across Greece due to transportation difficulties.

Despite these unavoidable cancellations, the overall programme of the 37th Cultural Festival 2024 left a strong impression on the audience, offering evenings of high artistic quality and reaffirming the timeless role of the Sainopouleio as a living center of culture. The Sainopouleio Foundation and the Municipality of Sparta renew their appointment with the public for the next edition, continuing to serve with consistency and respect both the vision of the benefactors and the community’s need for meaningful cultural expression.
