Sainopouleio Amphitheater

The 38th Cultural Festival of Sainopoulei 2025 has ended

With a rich and diverse program, which embraced tradition, theater and music, the events of 2025 at the Sainopouleio Amphitheater of Sparta were completed.

The events began on Wednesday, 25 June with “A Stroll through Greek Tradition” by the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Sparta, offering an evening filled with music, dance, and vibrant elements of Greece’s cultural heritage.

This was followed on Thursday, 26 June by the “Anniversary Dance Performance – DISNEY EDITION” by the DC Elite Arts Dance School, which filled the stage with color, movement, and beloved characters, delighting both children and adults.

A special place in the programme was reserved for children’s performances, with the highlight being “Mozart: The Magic Flute” by Carmen Rouggeri on Wednesday, 2 July, introducing children to the world of opera in a fairytale-like and accessible way.

In the musical programme, the following stood out:
  • the concert by the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Sparta featuring an “Tribute to Mikis Theodorakis” on Wednesday, 9 July,
  • the major concert by Pyx Lax on Monday, 4 August,
  • and the event “The Journey – A Tribute to Ilias Andriopoulos” on Wednesday, 20 August, which highlighted important moments of modern Greek song.
A central role in this year’s programme was also held by the theatre performances, featuring strong productions from both the classical and contemporary repertoire:
  • “Philoctetes” by Sophocles (Monday, 14 July),
  • “Electra” by Sophocles (Monday, 21 July),
  • “Enigmatic Variations” by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt (Monday, 28 July),
  • “Antigone” by Sophocles (Friday, 1 August),
  • “The Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni (Wednesday, 6 August),
  • “Laurels and Oleanders” by Dimitris Kehagias and Eleni Chaviara (Wednesday, 13 August),
  • and “Inspector Drake and the Black Widow” by David Tristram (Monday, 18 August).
Each of these productions added its own unique contribution to a season full of intensity, emotion, and reflection, reaffirming Sainopouleio’s role as a point of reference for quality theatre in Laconia.

As part of the children’s programme, the performance “Romeo and Juliet Meet Karagiozis” with Kostas Spyropoulos had also been scheduled; however, it was cancelled due to an injury sustained by the lead performer. The cancellation was announced in due time, prioritizing the safety of both the cast and the audience, with the hope that this production will be hosted in a future edition of the festival.

With the completion of this year’s programme, the Sainopouleio Amphitheatre once again confirms that it remains a vibrant cultural hub for Sparta and the wider region, hosting events that blend tradition with contemporary artistic expression and keeping the public’s interest alive throughout the season.
